Pay Versus Commute: Don’t Get Caught In An Audit Of Your Travel Expenses Which May Result In A Payroll Tax Assessment!
We have a mobile economy and many workers travel daily for their jobs. When an employee travels, there are situations where the amounts you pay as ‘expense’ reimbursements could, in fact, be wages, subject to all payroll taxes.
But at what point is the payment you are making for their car, hotel, and airfare no longer considered an allowable travel expense but considered commute - and therefore taxable wages.
Learning Objectives:
This audio conference covers the IRS rules regarding what is considered travel versus commute and what is an allowable expense versus taxable wages. It will enable you to understand how and when to compensate an employee for travel time away from a work site.
It will analyze which employees are entitled to travel time pay and at what rate, and show how critical it is to communicate the rate of pay, the requirements of travel and the travel tracking necessary to compensate the employee properly. It also discusses typical problems that arise with travel and other FLSA issues such as meals during travel.
By attending this audio conference you will learn: - What is considered bona fide travel by the IRS: the rules for mileage, car rental, airfare, hotel, personal aircraft are all addressed
- What are the accountable plan rules as they pertain to travel expenses? How quickly must receipts be provided by an employee? How often do expense reports needs to be submitted?
- What is considered a wage or a taxable commute benefit?
- The IRS guidelines regarding commute costs
- “Breaks in service” allowing travel expenses to avoid reclassification as wages?
- The concepts of “co-locating” and “tax turtles” also will be addressed

| About Webcasts / Audio Conferences / Podcasts: |
Webcasts, audio conferences, and podcasts are presentations that you attend via the Internet, phone, or mobile device at a specified date and time for "live" versions, or at your convenience for "recorded" and "On-Demand" versions.
The live versions are interactive, meaning that participants can ask questions in real time, plus are a very cost-effective form a training because 1) you receive fast, convenient learning without any out-of-office time; 2) you can invite as many colleagues as you'd like to listen in on a single phone line; 3) you incur no travel expenses; and 4) you and your colleagues are back at work immediately after the session ends!
And though with recorded versions you do lose the ability to ask questions, you gain the ability to hear the presentation numerous times and to share it with others in your office.
Handout materials and the phone number for live presentations are made available to you prior to the event via email from the presenter and from the "MyAccount" link on the menu bar. Copies of the presentations are included with recorded versions. |
