Late filing. TIN matching. Errors on returns. Any of these items may result in a penalty from either a state or federal agency, but many times these penalties can be waived if you follow the proper procedures.
We all know that penalties can be costly and annoying – especially if they are for an inadvertent mistake. But some of these penalties can be appealed or waived with a show of good cause.
If the penalties are not appealed, they give the impression of a payroll department that is not compliant or prudent in their filings.
Payroll personnel not familiar with reporting requirements may be required to submit deposits due to layoffs, W2s may be sent out that weren’t reviewed for correctness, W-9s may not be required by Human Resources before a contractor is hired. In all of these instances, penalties may result and you may be called upon to attempt a penalty waiver.
We will arm you with all you need to know in order to submit a penalty waiver request and hopefully enable you to receive the waiver.

About Your Speaker
Mindy Harada, CPP, is an employment tax specialist who has over 17 years of employment tax experience as an independent consultant, an employee with one of the Big 4 firms, and as a payroll tax auditor. Ms. Harada previously was the west coast practice leader for the Employment Tax Practice at Deloitte Tax LLP.
Ms. Harada is a frequent presenter on various employment tax topics at APA events and for several payroll service providers on a national basis. She has presented before the Society of CPAs and has also spoken at several Payroll Conferences throughout the country.
